Support the Great Lakes Biochar Initiative

The Great Lakes Biochar Initiative (GLBI) is a 501(c)(3) pending nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing nutrient pollution from non-point sources in Great Lakes watersheds through practical, soil-based solutions.

Your support helps us work directly with farmers, agricultural operations, and watershed partners to keep nutrients on the land and out of our lakes.

Why Your Support Matters

Excess phosphorus and nitrogen runoff continue to threaten the Great Lakes, contributing to harmful algal blooms, drinking water challenges, and ecosystem degradation. Addressing these issues requires solutions that work at the source—where nutrients are managed and applied.

GLBI focuses on voluntary, data-driven approaches that support both agricultural productivity and water quality by:

     •      Advancing soil health strategies, including biochar applications

     •      Supporting on-farm pilot and demonstration projects

     •      Promoting education and outreach for nutrient management

     •      Building partnerships across agriculture and conservation communities

Donor support allows GLBI to remain independent, responsive, and focused on measurable impact.

How Your Donation Is Used

Contributions to GLBI directly support:

     •      On-farm pilot projects
Materials, implementation support, and monitoring for nutrient reduction efforts.

     •     Education & outreach
Field days, workshops, and farmer-focused learning opportunities.

     •     Research & data collection evaluating outcomes that help scale effective nutrient management practices.

     •     Program & partnership development
     •      Building collaborations that extend impact across Great Lakes watersheds.

We are committed to responsible stewardship of donor funds and transparent use of resources.
